Greatness Doesn't Care: How you become the greatest version of YOU

FIND YOUR PURPOSE AND CHASE IT WITH EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT.

Greatness isn’t reserved for the privileged or the perfect. It doesn’t care where you come from, your age, what you look like, how much you have, your gender, your religion, or what you’ve been through. What it does ask of you is this: find your purpose, choose courage and change everything.

Greatness Doesn't Care confronts the seductive trap of comparison. It reminds readers that greatness isn’t about being better than others – it’s about being bolder than your fears. It’s about choosing growth over ease, purpose over popularity, and progress over perfection. You’ll learn that the most potent force in
your life isn’t talent or luck – it’s your decision to keep going when everything tells you to stop.

SPEAKER_00

Good morning, Jason Dunn. Welcome to Yellow Shell for the first time.

SPEAKER_01

Thanks, Joe. Great to be here.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, my pleasure. Jason, your second book. Tell us all about Greatness Doesn't Care.

SPEAKER_01

Where do I start? Okay, let me chunk down 85,000 words and 62 years of living if I can. I wrote my second book, Greatness Doesn't Care, as a blueprint, a blueprint for anybody that wants to be more, anybody that wants to become more than yesterday, and you know, all the way through to anyone that wants to become the greatest version of themselves. So that's the kind of essence of greatness doesn't care. I based what what I wanted to do in terms of the blueprint and pathway was to create something that any human being could identify with and say, here's the 14 steps to greatness. Here's where I am. Or any, or here's a few steps that I haven't got, I'm stuck at, I've stalled, or maybe I've started, but you know what I know I need to master. And you you know, and the intent was that any human on any given day can take some small steps, uh sorry, some yeah, uh make small moves on any of those 14 steps more than they were yesterday.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And we think of greatness, oh, I think of greatness sometimes as very unachievable and unattainable. And I guess what your book does is it dispels that myth for me and and you know, levels it out.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you. Well, what do we so hopefully well that's that's obviously uh had some impression on you, Joe. So look, the greatness, and you know, it's society and social media would have us believe that greatness is something that it's you know up here, you know, it's reserved for the talented, it's reserved um for the privileged, it's reserved for the lucky, but it ain't reserved for anyone. And hence the title of greatness doesn't care is greatness doesn't care who you are, how old you are, what color you are, what religion you are, what you look like, what your hair's like, how much money you have. It doesn't care about any of that. And history, and when you look around you, when you look closely around you, is people that find their own greatness, which is not a comparison with anyone else, their own greatness, um, you know, they're everywhere. And you can you can start that pathway, you know, you can move down that pathway on any given day. So greatness is not a comparison. Greatness, for me by definition, everyday greatness, is where you live with purpose, you find purpose or purposes, um, and you live your life aligned to your values and those purposes, and you overcome struggle, or you work with struggle, adversity, challenge, disappointment, failure, and you're severe, and you accomplish something that's truly meaningful to you in your life. And that can be, you know, to others that might seem this small, but it's irrelevant. All that matters is you is you become more, you feel good about yourself, and you find your own greatness. That that is the context of this. But on the other end of the scale, and so what I've what I've done is sort of curated through each of the 14 steps that I have found throughout my life, um, from my you know, my pivotal change in life 27 years ago, because I'm 62 now, um, right through to today, are tenants of greatness and tenants of life that I continue to learn from and I continue to grow. And so there's something in there for anyone and everyone. And look, that change was so massive and so profound for me. Uh, in terms of overcoming setbacks, I mean, I've been, you know, I've been close to financial ruin late in my life, um, uh taking risks to try and save a company and lots of people's jobs. I've been hospitalized 35 times, had four near-death accidents, I've broken 45 bones, I've had illnesses that are life-threatening illnesses. And I've been blessed to find a way to see to find gratitude, which is one of the 14 steps, and to and to learn about so much about myself and to persevere. And I've achieved things that I thought were impossible, many things I thought were impossible. And as you go through life and your belief, which belief is one of the 14 steps, as your belief grows, then your lens and how you see the world and how you see what you are capable of just grows in ways that you you can't foresee. I couldn't have foresee these ways.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And look, thank you for sharing like how much you've overcome and and the reality, you know, at times your own self-doubt, because you're also quite accomplished.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, thank you. Um I have uh I have been blessed to find the courage and the planning, and it's nasty and resilience and and so on to do things. So again, I, you know, a couple of years before, three or four years before, maybe five years before, I never would have thought possible. And yeah, this is the most recent one. And if you ask me, despite those accomplishments, yeah, um, 14 times Iron Man, Hawaii Iron Man World Championships from the couch as a smoker, non-swimmer with a deep fear of drowning, and then I've run many, many uh the toughest ultra marathons around the world, um, some local ultramarathons I've been fortunate enough to win. Um, you know, that they just keep things keep manifesting themselves. So whether that's you know, my career as a as a CEO and you know, bringing a company back from the brink, and and now at the age of 62, you know, if you said to me five years ago, would I be you know published twice and now you know have an amazing publisher behind me and you know with global distribution, uh, you know, would I be here today five years ago? I wouldn't I wouldn't have thought it was the case.

SPEAKER_00

And look, what your book did for me was it allowed me to think about greatness on my own terms, but you also gave me the step, you know, like you talked me through your journey and your steps. Um, and you you you acknowledged it before, you know, greatness isn't comparing yourselves to others or other greatness, it's about just for me, sometimes getting through my juggles, getting through my yeah, and it's it's it's powerful.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I I think again, comparison, Joe. I mean, you are where you are, and you know, whether you you're you're obviously very you're young, you know, other people might not be so young, and we have this tendency in life to often accept where we are. That might be in any asset or tenant of our life. You know, I accept that my life is will not grow any, you know, more than this is what this is it for me in terms of whether it's a relationship, health, fitness, career, whatever it is. And so then it plateaus and then it kind of goes down, but you know, with the right mindset, and you can cultivate and nurture your mindset to take you absolutely anywhere. You know, when you know, I always say, you know, when in terms of resilience, resilience is experience, you know, finding purpose, having courage, planning, giving something a go. And you kind of go, yeah, that wasn't as scary as I thought it was. I didn't, oh I wasn't so bad at that or that terrible outcome didn't happen. That's how you build resilience. And so for me, resilience through all those events, um, you know, even public humiliation and being laughed at, and a whole bunch of other things, resilience enabled me, and this is what I'd love other people to do. Um, resilience is in the face of struggle, adversity, trauma, whatever it is, to see a wall or a door.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

So when something happens to you, you either see a wall or you see a door. And resilience is your capability to see a door more quickly, and a door that you can walk through with belief, not just faith or hope, although they may play a part of that, but belief, which is evidence-based, to go, yeah, I will survive this, but not only will I survive it, I'll learn from it. And there is more to me, and I'm gonna show me that there's more to me, and uh, you know, that self-mastery, which is what the the very heart of stoic philosophy, and I've got stoic philosophy peppered throughout each of the 14 steps, as you know, plus you know, some other remarkable humans in history, and I've also created you know my favorite books in terms of each of those 14 steps as well. So this isn't all just about me, and so that is you know, that's what I want to bring to people. I want I just want to help people find their best life, find the best version of themselves, feel happy and uh and find meaning.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And Jason, if anyone out there is curious and has enjoyed our interview, is curious about you, curious about the book, I know you're on Facebook, there's there's social platforms. I mean, point us in the direction because um I'll put it in the show notes, but I do want to acknowledge your first book, Unlimited.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so Unlimited. Um I waited to, yeah, so Unlimited, I wrote three years ago, published uh two or two and a half years ago. Um, it ended up I couldn't get anybody to take me on, you know, 2026 published has not me back, the same typical thing. I'm you know, I'm not anyone, um, I'm not I'm not well known. Yes, and it was as much it was probably a memoir style, it was pretty, pretty raw style about many of my experiences in life. My intent then was to show again, people how you can you nurture yourself to become more. And you know, unlimited is about how you create an unlimited mindset because ultimately your mindset will determine. You know, one of my favorite quotes from Henry Ford is you know, whether you believe you will or you believe you won't, you will. So yeah, it is as simple as that. When you have belief that's evidence-based, so that was my first attempt. Everyone knocked me back. Um, I didn't spend any money, didn't really, you know, I did some networking on, and you know, 5,000 people around the world have read that already. And uh what I love the most, the thing that brings me true meaning is when somebody I don't know somewhere on the other side of the world says, I read your book and it and it changed my life. Thank you. And that's why I do this.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. No, look, after I I read Greatness, Doesn't Care, I I went back to Unlimited. And yeah, I'll make sure I put a link in the show notes to for anyone, uh, especially to your socials, to connect with you. Jason, thanks so much for joining us. I I want you to enjoy this time. I know you've got some speaking events. I saw your schedule. Um, enjoy all that because that's uh such a great accomplishment. Um, particularly your journey. Last time as uh an author, you know, it's it's it's always not easy. People look at authors, um, and and you know, different books have different journeys.

SPEAKER_01

They do. Nothing in life that is worthwhile, Joe, is easy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Nothing. Nothing. So I yeah, I really hope we can get this going in Australia before the uh North America and UK release in early November. And um, yeah, I'll be over there promoting as well. So I really appreciate your time. Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

Awesome. Jason, thanks for joining us. All the best.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, thanks, Joe. Bye.
